The 21st Academic Conference of the Chinese Burn Association of Integrative Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Opens in Hefei
The 21st Academic Conference on Burn and Wound Repair, organized by the Chinese Burn Association of Integrative Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, officially opened in Hefei on June 14. Co-hosted by the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, the conference gathered more than 700 experts and scholars from across China’s 31 provinces and regions. This year’s theme, “Integration, Innovation, Development,” reflected the nation’s momentum in bridging traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with advanced regenerative science in burn care.
Opening Ceremony: A United Vision for Burn Medicine’s Future
The event was chaired by Professor Sun Yexiang, incoming chair of the Burn Committee. In his welcome address, Professor Chen Xulin, Vice President of Anhui Medical University’s First Affiliated Hospital, emphasized the importance of the meeting as a catalyst for innovation in burn and wound treatment.
National TCM master Professor Han Mingxiang highlighted how integrative approaches in wound healing have progressed from theory to global collaboration. Professor Zhou Jianda, current chair of the Burn Committee, noted that burn medicine is now entering an unprecedented era of opportunity—one that requires combining ancient wisdom with emerging technologies. Deputy Director Wang Huixiao from the Anhui Provincial Health Commission added that dismantling barriers between TCM and Western medicine is essential to the broader advancement of Chinese medicine.
Scientific Highlights: Multidisciplinary Dialogues Across Six Forums
The main forum featured keynote presentations from renowned experts including Professor Han Mingxiang, Professor Ji Yonghua, and Professor Tang Qianli. Topics included the role of traditional medicine in modern clinical care, innovations in skin regeneration, and the latest in MEBO/MEBT technologies. Dr. Ariel Miranda, President-Elect of the International Society for Burn Injuries (ISBI), also shared a video message presenting global progress in skin substitute technologies.
Five parallel sub-forums explored specialized topics:
Burns Sub-forum: Focused on critical burn treatment, plastic repair, and clinical application of regenerative technology, covering the entire multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment pathway from emergency care to rehabilitation.
Wound Repair Sub-forum: Centered on mechanism research and regenerative medical technology transformation for chronic wounds like diabetic foot ulcers and radiation ulcers, exploring clinical breakthroughs in necrotic tissue regeneration.
Nursing and Rehabilitation Sub-forum: Shared nursing experiences in applying regenerative medical technology for burns and wound repair, constructing a closed-loop management model of "treatment - nursing - rehabilitation".
Youth Doctor Forum: Young scholars explored innovative applications of tissue repair and regeneration, focusing on cutting-edge technologies like nano-enzymes and extracellular matrix regulation.
Anhui Integrative Medicine Sub-forum: Based on regional needs, it explored grassroots-appropriate schemes of "modern medical assessment + traditional Chinese medicine external therapy" to enhance provincial wound repair levels.
Across 125 expert-led presentations and in-depth case discussions, the conference showcased China’s advancements in burn rescue, chronic wound management, and clinical innovation. Experts agreed that the integration of TCM and modern science, combined with interdisciplinary collaboration, is key to transforming the future of burn and wound care.
